Fourteen

Reese watched as Alice fell to her knees. He took off, getting to her just in time to catch her before her head hit the ground. “Alice!”

She mumbled something, but he couldn’t understand.

He’d never felt so helpless as he held her in his arms, hanging limp and unresponsive. Damn it.

The cow was on her own. Alice needed help.

Laying her down on her bedroll, he made quick work of saddling Duke back up. He laid Alice across the saddle before climbing up behind her. He cradled her in his arms as he clicked his tongue and nudged his horse with his heels.

Another nudge and Duke took off, as fast as Reese dared to get off the mountain. He used his knees to guide and maneuver Duke down the grade.

A drift of smoke wafted from the chimney of the bunk house as they neared, but Reese wasn’t stopping there. There was only one person who might be able to help. At least Alice trusted her enough that he knew Candy knew about Alice’s secret.

Urging Duke into a dead run once they hit flat ground, they blurred past the main house and down the drive. He let his horse lead as they pushed forward.

Duke sped to the highway. Reese nudged him with his knee to turn toward town, staying along the side of the road off the asphalt.

A light was still on at the bakery. Reese sighed with relief.

He jumped down with Alice still clutched in his arms. He burst through the front bakery door. “Candy!”

Candy ran from the back, a frantic look plastered on her face as she took in the sight before her.

“I knew it. I just knew it!” She darted over to her friend. “I saw you bringing her here about an hour ago. Come on, bring her back here.”

Reese didn’t have time to ask questions, like how she saw him bringing Alice when Candy wasn’t with them. Although after tonight, he was beginning to think there were a lot of things he might believe from now on.

He followed her through the back swinging door and halted. “Whoa.”

The bakery’s kitchen looked like it came straight from a Halloween TV Special—complete with a mulled cider scent. A black cauldron hung over an open flame in the fireplace, steam drifting over the lip, flowing to the floor. Bottles of all sorts of concoctions lined shelves on the far wall, and books that looked as if they were older than the town were stacked in piles around the quaint room.

Alice’s affirmation about being a witch hit him. She wasn’t kidding.

In the middle of the room was a table that was cleared off. Candy walked right to it. “Put her over here.”

With heavy feet, Reese felt like he might as well have been walking the plank. Each step closer meant he’d have to give her up. But, he couldn’t help her.

Candy set about wetting a rag and wringing it out. “It’s okay. She’ll be just fine. But, I don’t know about you. The rest of the coven should be here soon.
